OUR IMPACT
Data Reporting Period:
January 2018 to June 2021
COUNTRY SITUATION
In 2020, Philippines topped in second rank amongst other Asian countries for the highest number of COVID-19 cases, as of September 1st 2021 total cases in the country had breached to 2 million that resulted in local lockdowns, strict community quarantine, restricting mobility and commercial activity including closure of education facilities and no face to face classes. This has brought huge negative consequences to the country’s economy particularly on family income, jobs, education, food security and business.
The Philippines is the twelfth most populated country in the world, and is a lower middle-income country. The country’s economic advances have been marked by slow human development, persistent poverty, and slow and uneven growth. The Philippines has been heavily affected by natural disasters and conflicts, which have devastated communities and fuelled poverty. The country is prone to typhoons, flooding, drought, rain-induced landslides, volcanic eruptions, storm surges and earthquakes. The Philippines is ranked amongst the top five countries in the world in terms of vulnerability to climate change. The Southern Philippines, has had a complex history of ethnic and armed conflict over the past decades. This has severe consequences for children including death, injury, displacement, and sexual violence.
OUR APPROACH
BRAC Philippines takes a participatory, community-based, and inclusive approach to designing context-specific, impactful programmes. Our interventions in urban, rural, and refugee settings prioritise the equitable participation of all groups, particularly women and youth. We work directly with communities, keeping their voice and their story at the centre of our programmes.
OUR PROGRAMMES
Abot Kaalaman sa Pamilyang-Bangsamoro Project
The Abot Kaalaman sa Pamilyang-Bangsamoro (AKAP) project of the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE) rooted from the ACCESS policy in 2018. BRAC Philippines provides technical assistance in establishing AKAP learning centres, facilitating coaching and mentoring activities to different project stakeholders, including identification and scoping of 93 userved barangays in need of education services, establishment of coordination network amongst MBHTE, partners civil society organisations, and other education stakeholders. BRAC Philippines plans to continue its engagement and support the MBHTE in implementing the AKAP programme Phase-3 to 93 communities in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao region. BRAC also aims to develop its programme coverage in education during emergencies covering communities vulnerable to natural and artificial calamities.![](/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Phillipines-Education-1.webp)
COVID-19 RESPONSE
BRAC Philippines aims to complement the BARMM government’s efforts to combat COVID-19 through a number of initiatives to enhance COVID-19 awareness and prevention like development and dissemination of informational messages and IECs about COVID-19 protocols and vaccinations, facilitate hygiene promotion activities through community sessions and provision of PPE materials and hygiene items, engage community stakeholders in raising awareness around COVID-19 protocols and vaccinations in communities and learning centers and provision of low cost hand washing stations in 30 selected communities in BARMM.![ELA Club in Africa](/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Phillippines-COVID-2-1.webp)
Graduation Approach Pilot Project
BRAC’s Graduation programmes are built with more than just the individual in mind, and its impacts are meant to be both long-lasting and intergenerational. The Graduation approach has proven itself to be a holistic tool designed to build resilience of extreme poor households in even the most dire of situations. It serves as a clear example of an intervention that can effectively empower individuals and households to weather a storm and come out the other side with confidence that they can continue to improve their lives and quickly adapt to change. As the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Graduation pilot reached its final stage, the growth and commitment of the pilot participants during these harrowing times could not be more extraordinary. Although the future remains uncertain, we firmly believe that with the right tools, support, and knowledge, the world’s poorest people can withstand and overcome devastating shocks like COVID-19.![ELA Club in Africa](/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/ph-programmes-1-1.webp)

All people need is the opportunity to realise it.
