OUR IMPACT
Data Reporting Period:
January 2018 to June 2021
COUNTRY SITUATION
Three decades of ongoing conflicts and instability have adversely affected the education system of Afghanistan. An estimated 3.7 million children are out-of-school with girls accounting for 60% of them. The sociopolitical, institutional, climate, and humanitarian challenges facing the country have led to a fragile education system.
Afghanistan lags behind in the majority of internationally comparable health metrics in comparison to other Asian countries. Only 59% of women receive post-childbirth treatment and a mere 51% of deliveries are attended by skilled midwives. Mortality rates are 70 per 1,000 live births for children under five.
In most of the project areas in Afghanistan, instability, insecurity, and social conflicts are major challenges that restrict or negatively affect BRAC interventions. Cultural barriers and traditional beliefs, which include restrictions on women’s participation in development and decision-making activities, working, movement, and access to education also cause delays in project implementation.
OUR APPROACH
BRAC Afghanistan takes a participatory, community-based, and inclusive approach to designing context-specific, impactful programmes. Our interventions in urban, rural, and refugee settings prioritise the equitable participation of all groups, particularly women and youth. We work directly with communities, keeping their voice and their story at the centre of our programmes.
OUR PROGRAMMES
Capacity Development Programme
BRAC Afghanistan’s Capacity Development Programme (CDP) emerged to meet the growing capacity development needs in Afghanistan; expanding skills and development opportunities for NGOs, government and private sector professionals. The CDP learning centre offers holistic capacity building support for personnel and organisations moving forward to professional excellence and efficiency and provides support to organisations in conducting training in safeguarding and actively investigating issues. Currently, it operates in 10 provinces.![](/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Afghanistan-Capacity-Development-Programme.webp)
Citizen’s Charter Afghanistan Project
The Citizen’s Charter Afghanistan Project (CCAP) is operated by BRAC Afghanistan under the Citizens’ Charter National Priority Programme, a flagship programme of the National Unity Government of Afghanistan. The main objective of this project is to improve the delivery of core infrastructure and social services through strengthened Community Development Councils (CDCs). The CCAP closed in April 2021; it effectively contributed to the government’s long term goal of reducing poverty and deepening the relationship between citizens and the state.![ELA Club in Africa](/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Afghanistan-Citizens-Charter-Afghanistan-Project.webp)
Education
BRAC Afghanistan’s Education programme aims to eliminate the hurdles that prevent children, especially girls, from receiving education. Our interventions focus on access to education, quality education, infrastructure development, as well as mobilising communities, especially in favour of girls’ education. We provided stipends to students living in extreme poverty to continue with their education in our community-based schools. Since 2020, BRAC Afghanistan piloted distant education modules, providing helpline education support to the school girls during the COVID-19 pandemic.![ELA Club in Africa](/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Afghanistan-Education.webp)
Health
BRAC Afghanistan’s Health programme focuses on a health system strengthening approach, aiming to reduce infant and maternal mortalities, improve maternal health and child health, and combat tuberculosis, malaria and other infectious diseases. We provide health services through seven projects including: COVID-19 Response, Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS), BPHS+, Community-based Outreach Vaccination (CBOV-1, CBOV-2), Country Coordination Mechanism (CCM) Fund, and Malaria Prevention in Helmand, Kapisa, Panjshir, and Parwan provinces.![ELA Club in Africa](/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Afghanistan-Health.webp)

OUR STORY
All people need is the opportunity to realise it.
Our story began in a small village in Bangladesh in 1972. 50 years later, BRAC is the largest NGO in the world with roots and origins in the global south. What began as relief work, deepened and broadened into long-term investment in human potential.
